The Right Equipment!

Having the right equipment in your bag gives you confidence in what you are doing. Well let's take a look at what can be done to help. There are four major aspects of an iron that can be customised to suit you.

The length of a club – Srixon have a standard for each iron in the bag, it does not matter if you are average height, you may need clubs that have been lengthened or even shortened. If you are hitting the shots consistently out of the toe of the iron it may well mean that you need your clubs lengthened and if you hit your shots out of the neck of the club then you may well need them shortened. All of this is also altered by the way you swing the golf club. The lie angle of the club – this is the area that will mostly affect your shot pattern. If the lie angle is incorrect then it may answer some questions as to why you always draw or fade your irons, without actually wanting to. Below are three photos with explanations to demonstrate how important it is have the correct lie fitted to your irons.

Too Far Forward

If the ball is positioned too far forward in the stance then this can lead to the shoulders being open at address, which in turn causes an out-to-in swing path resulting in a slice.

Too Flat

If your club is too flat at impact then the heel of the club will strike the turf, causing the club to turn over or shut down, imparting a right to left spin on the golf ball. This causes a draw and un-solid feel through impact. The shot may also go low, giving an increase in distance with no flight on the ball.

The Perfect Lie

The perfect lie angle through impact, this is what we strive to achieve by having a club fitted for us. This will give us a true ball flight unaffected by the lie, the ball will travel straight and true.

Once we have the correct iron lie and length we can then move to looking at grip size. There are three basic rules when deciding upon grip size. If a grip is too thin then there will be a lack of control over the club and the hands will become over active. If the grip is too thick then there will be a lack of control again over the club and the hands will be very passive through the swing. The correct fitting (for right handed players, reverse for left handed players) is so that the tip of the middle finger on the left hand just touches the fleshy part of the left hand when closed around the grip of the club. Anything else is incorrect and needs adjusting.
The final part of ensuring you have the correct equipment for you is the shaft. Shaft technology is growing at a rapid rate, however the less you know about shafts the better. The one thing to keep in mind is that if you have a slower swing speed and a weaker strike upon the ball then you will need more flex in the shaft. Then the quicker you swing the club and the stronger you are through impact the stiffer the shaft you will require.
